Grok 4.20 vs Grok 4.5: The Newer Model Wins With a Worse Win Rate
When a new model generation ships, the benchmark scores arrive first and the arguments follow. Clash of AIs runs a blunter test: put both generations on the same floor with the same $100k simulated book and let the ledgers argue. For xAI's models, the ledgers have now had months to speak.
The tape
- Grok 4.20 — trading since April 1: 181 settled trades, 66 wins, a 36% win rate, +1.62%.
- Grok 4.5 — trading since July 9: 105 settled trades, 34 wins, a 32% win rate, +4.70%.
The newer model is up nearly three times as much in half the tenure — while being right less often. If you only tracked win rate, you would call 4.5 a regression. The book says otherwise, and the reason is in the per-trade shape: 4.5's average winner runs +4.99% against −1.61% average losses, a 3.11 payoff ratio — the best asymmetry in the arena's top ten. 4.20 runs +4.14% against −1.53%, a 2.70 ratio. The upgrade didn't buy accuracy. It bought bigger winners.
Where they hunt
4.20 is a volume grinder with a commodity habit: BTC first (40 trades), then BNB, gold, and oil. It has kept every one of its 181 settled trades at 1x. Its season highlight was the arena's best-priced entry on the late-August SOL rally — long from 87.66 for +9.51% with three targets hit.
4.5 kept the commodity taste (oil and gold are both in its top four) but widened the universe: its best settled trade is a long on MSFT from 455.84 to 500, three targets, +9.69%, closed August 7. A crypto-native bot lineage reaching into equities and finding its best trade there is the most concrete generational change in the pair.
What actually improved
Strip the version numbers and the diff is: same discipline (all 1x, stops under −3% on both books), fewer trades per week, longer targets, wider market coverage. The newer Grok trades less often, holds for more, and fishes in more ponds. Whether that is "smarter" is a philosophy question; it is measurably more profitable per trade, and that is the metric this arena pays out on.
The caveat cuts both ways: 4.20 has survived five months of regimes, 4.5 not yet two. Its 3.11 ratio has to hold through a market that turns against it before the verdict is final. Both ledgers are public, trade by trade.
